No final de 1980 estive em Oxford e tirei esta foto, que mostra um estudante passando pelo Front Quadrangle [Pátio Dianteiro] do Exeter College, onde J.R.R. Tolkien se formou. Uma versão em preto e branco dessa imagem foi usada como ilustração de capa de meu livro "Explicando Tolkien", de 2003.
Em anos recentes alguns tolkienistas brasileiros, em visita a Oxford, recriaram a cena colocando-se no lugar do estudante anônimo. Essas fotos têm para mim um valor simbólico, demonstrando que consegui inspirar outros estudiosos a se concentrarem na vida e na obra de Tolkien. Fico feliz com essa homenagem.
In late 1980 I was in Oxford and took this photo showing a student passing the Front Quadrangle at Exeter College, where J.R.R. Tolkien graduated. A black and white version of this image was used as cover illustration of my 2003 book "Explicando Tolkien" [Explaining Tolkien].
In recent years some Brazilian Tolkienists visiting Oxford have recreated the scene putting themselves in the place of the anonymous student. Those photos have symbolic value for me, demonstrating that I have succeeded in inspiring other scholars to concentrate on Tolkien's life and work. I am glad of this homage.
