Treze fantasmas | Thirteen ghosts

Por trás de cada homem que hoje vive estão trinta fantasmas, pois essa é a proporção pela qual os mortos superam os vivos. Desde o alvorecer dos tempos, cerca de cem bilhões de seres humanos caminharam no planeta Terra.

Ora, esse é um número interessante, pois, por uma curiosa coincidência, há aproximadamente cem bilhões de estrelas em nosso universo local, a Via Láctea. Assim, para cada homem que já viveu, uma estrela brilha neste Universo.

 Estas palavras estão no início de 2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço de Arthur C. Clarke, publicado em 1968, quando a população mundial era de 3,5 bilhões. Hoje, que somos 7,9 bilhões, poderíamos dizer que treze fantasmas caminham atrás de cada ser humano.

Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living. Since the dawn of time, roughly a hundred billion human beings have walked the planet Earth.

Now this is an interesting number, for by a curious coincidence there are approximately a hundred billion stars in our local universe, the Milky Way. So for every man who has ever lived, in this Universe there shines a star.

These words stand at the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, published in 1968, when the world's population was 3.5 billion. Today we are 7.9 billion, and we might say that thirteen ghosts walk behind every human being.
